Cryogenic Fluids (Including Tanks)

A construction permit is required for installation of, or alteration to, an outdoor stationary cryogenic fluid storage system where the system capacity exceeds the amounts listed in Table 105.6.10. Of MSFC

Maintenance performed in accordance with MSFC is not considered to be an alteration and does not require a construction permit.

Submittal Requirements

An emergency plan shall be provided to the fire code official prior to final inspection and include the requirements of NFPA 55. 

Include on the plan:

  • Location of tanks and any firewalls

  • Location of other storage in relation to the Cryogenic fluid

  • Location of piping and emergency shut off locations

  • Leak detection and associated devices (separate permit required)

  • Description of signage and location of signage

  • Method of securing tanks

  • Any heat sources in relation to the tank

  • Location of exits in vicinity of compressed gasses

  • Physical protection of tanks

  • Data sheets related to the Cryogenic fluid

  • Data sheets related to tank construction, piping and associated devices
